We see digital spaces as a shared community—just like our towns and neighborhoods—where people learn, connect, and spend their lives. We treat privacy as a core part of online safety. We help people stand up for their digital rights and share ways to stay safe as technology continues to change and evolve.

Digital Frontier Alliance's Inaugural Project

Michigan has a uniquely strong tradition—and legal structure— protecting the rights of people receiving Medicaid and public behavioral health services. But as technology advances, deeply personal data about diagnoses, service history, and struggles can end up being sold as a product.

Laws like HIPAA* were written for an earlier era and leave gaps that today’s data practices can exploit. We’re calling on leaders across Michigan’s public behavioral health system to act in the spirit of these privacy protections and work to close the loopholes of outdated rules.

Michigan’s public system leaders, providers, partners, advocates, and vendors must pledge to protect the data of vulnerable individuals from being bought, sold, or traded as a commodity.
